NSERVE is a career & technical education consortium of nine high schools in the northern suburbs of Chicago, representing approximately 24,000 secondary students. As NSERVE continues to pursue its vision to connect academics to the world of work it continues to sponsor events like Media.COM, iTECH, Manufacturing Expo, and Summer Career Exploration courses. NSERVE also sponsors additional events for student enrichment each year. For example, NSERVE collaborates with Oakton Community College on an annual Accounting Contest, where private sector accountants serve as speakers and judges. NSERVE also provides funding for the regional Latino Summit, to encourage career direction and postsecondary awareness for Hispanic students.

NSERVE continues to work diligently to provide enriching professional development seminars and workshops for all instructors in the consortium. In addition to our Summer Professional Development workshops, software training (i.e., VIZ, Inventor and FlashCUT) has been provided to instructors each year. Exemplary culinary training for family & consumer science teachers is arranged annually through Kendall Culinary College, in Chicago.

In 2008, NSERVE hosted Dr. James Stone, Director of the National Research Center for Career & Technical Education, to present a Math-in-CTE seminar for the high schools in the NSERVE consortium. As a follow-up to this seminar, NSERVE issued The Great Math-in-CTE Challenge! Stipends of $500 were offered to the top teams that submitted an integrated unit plan where mathematics and CTE teachers collaborated to help students make connections in both their CTE and math classes. The winner of The Great Math-in-CTE Challenge is a unit that was created by Elizabeth Ball (Maine South Mathematics) and Brandon Sommer (Maine South Applied Arts & Technology) entitled, Variables in a Patient’s Pulse. Congratulations!

NSERVE has also hosted two DACUM business curriculum seminars and completed core competency charts with business partners, which was utilized in a gap analysis seminar.
