Realizing Illinois - Our Students Our Promise Our Future
American Diploma Project - NSERVE

Illinois has joined the American Diploma Project of Illinois to guide our efforts to align the high school standards to internationally competitive college and career ready benchmarks that are responsive to demands of the 21st century. This is an exciting initiative that will increase the rigor and relevance in teaching and learning for more than 2 million Illinois students.

The Illinois Learning Standards were developed in 1997 and have not undergone a revision process. In the spring of 2008, Achieve, Inc. conducted a review of the Standards in English language arts, mathematics, and science for grades 8 through 12. The review found that while Illinois’ standards were strong in some areas, in other areas the standards were vague and unclear, making it difficult for teachers to know exactly what students should be learning.
We are beginning the process of reviewing and revising Illinois standards to ensure that K-12 and postsecondary educators share a common understanding of what all students should know and be able to do in order to be successful in both postsecondary education and careers. Core content teams for English language arts and math began work early in 2009.

The Common Core State Standards Initiative is a joint effort by the National Governors Association Center for Best Practices (NGA Center) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) in partnership with Achieve, ACT and the College Board. Governors and state commissioners of education from across the country committed to joining a state-led process to develop a common core of state standards in English-language arts and mathematics for grades K-12. The drafts of these national standards are being crosswalked with The American Diploma Project core competencies. Our new state ELA and Math standards draft, will be crosswalked with both of the national initiatives before they are implemented.
